'In the driving seat': Journalist claims Arsenal leading race for 'incredible' £40m signing

Arsenal are “in the driving seat” to sign Youri Tielemans, according to journalist Ryan Taylor.

The Express reporter, writing on GiveMeSport, feels a deal is “there to be done” if the Gunners want him.

Arsenal have reportedly clinched the signing of Fabio Vieira this week.

However, it doesn’t look as though the Porto star’s arrival will stop the Gunners from also trying for Tielemans.

Why Are The Most Expensive Transfers Always Failures?

Indeed, Fabrizio Romano reported on Friday that Arsenal are indeed still in talks over the Leicester star.

And the Daily Mail claims Mikel Arteta wants both men through the door to really boost his side’s midfield creativity.

Meanwhile, Tottenham have also been linked with Tielemans in recent weeks.

However, Spurs have just landed a midfield signing of their own, bringing Yves Bissouma to N17.

This means Tielemans might not be as much of a priority for Tottenham any more.

Obviously you could say the same about Arsenal after reportedly landing Vieira.

Nonetheless, recent speculation suggests the Gunners will also try to sign the Belgium international.

And Taylor, writing on GiveMeSport, reckons Arsenal are leading the race for Tielemans.

“I know there’s interest, but there’s not been any teams that he’s a concrete target for,” he wrote.

“Tottenham will probably be one of the teams considering him, but you get the sense they’re looking at other names as well.

“So, for Arsenal, they’re the team in the driving seat and if they want to do the deal then I’m sure it’s there to be done, especially with one year remaining on his deal at Leicester.”

“You have to listen to other opportunities”

Tielemans, who Brendan Rodgers has deemed “one of Europe’s top midfielders”, left the door open on a summer move earlier.

“(Leaving) is not out of the question,” the Leicester Mercury quoted Tielemans as saying. “But I can also stay.

“I feel very good at Leicester, I was welcomed with open arms from day one. I give everything for the club until the last day.

“But of course you have to listen to other opportunities, you have to look at your career, and sometimes you have to make choices. Maybe one will come my way.”

Over the next few weeks, things should be a bit clearer, but Tielemans to Arsenal certainly appears to be going in the right direction.

The £40million-rated Belgian, branded as an “incredible talent” by Michael Dawson, ticks so many boxes for Arteta.
