'I'm told': Romano reacts to reports Newcastle want Aubameyang

Fabrizio Romano has told Rio Ferdinand on his YouTube channel that Newcastle United are not initially planning to prioritise a move for Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang because they want younger strikers through the door in the January transfer window.

The Magpies looked set to hand the Gunners a big boost in this window. It was reported at the weekend that Newcastle had made contact with Arsenal regarding a loan move with an option to buy. The Daily Mirror reported that the fee would have been £20 million.

Offloading Aubameyang would arguably be good news for Mikel Arteta. He earns £350,000-a-week, according to Sky Sports. And he is not playing for the Gunners right now. In fact, it is almost a month since his last appearance.

Obviously, his wages rule the large majority of sides out of the running for his signature. But Newcastle do seemingly have the means to make a deal happen.

However, Romano has suggested why Magpies fans should probably not expect to see the Gabon international end the window on their books either.

“They don’t have a serious bid on the table for Aubameyang,” he told FIVE. “We have a lot of rumours about Newcastle, a lot of rumours about other clubs outside England. But as of now, there’s nothing advanced yet. For Newcastle, I’m told they have different priorities, their priority targets are young strikers.

“So that’s why Aubameyang, for Newcastle, he’s not a priority. Maybe later in the window, but as of now, he’s not a priority.”

Arsenal would have always been aware that moving Aubameyang on would be tricky. Only a handful of clubs can afford his wages.

So Newcastle making a lucrative offer would have been ideal for many associated with Arsenal.

Romano has hinted that a move is not out of the question. But it would have been fantastic for the Gunners had they been able to move at least some of his wages on before the window really got going. It would have boosted their own hopes of further additions.

There are still options. Borussia Dortmund became the latest club to be linked with a move this week. But certainly, the Magpies seemed to be one side who would be able to make a serious offer for the former Arsenal captain.
