'I'm still unsure': Carragher says 25-year-old Spurs player will break into Conte's starting team this season

Jamie Carragher believes new signing Yves Bissouma will break into Tottenham Hotspur’s starting line-up this season.

In his Daily Telegraph column, Carragher talks about Antonio Conte’s new signings and singles out Bissouma as the player he believes will break into Conte’s first team.

“Conte can at least go into this weekend’s match knowing that his squad is in a better place now that it was in January, following the arrivals of Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, Ivan Perisic, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence.

“But I am still unsure as to how much these signings have really improved the starting lineup.

“Bissouma is a quality midfielder, and I expect him to be a regular starter, but aside from him we might be looking at the same starting team that we saw in the second half of last season.”

Carragher believes Bissouma can break into Tottenham starting line-up

It’s high praise indeed for Bissouma, with Tottenham already having a strong line-up of midfielders to choose from.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur spent the second half of last season as Conte’s preferred partnership.

Conte is also a huge fan of Oliver Skipp, who missed months of action last season, and the beginning of this season with an injury.

There are a few midfielders in the squad Bissouma won’t have to worry about to break into the starting line-up.

Conte is happy for Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Giovani Lo Celso to leave in the next few weeks, and none of them are in his plans moving forward.

Bissouma vs Bentancur

Bissouma is a fantastic all-round midfielder, capable of carrying the ball forward and breaking the lines, as well as being a fantastic defensive midfielder.

The Malian international recorded more tackles, interceptions and clearances last season than Rodrigo Bentancur, as well as having a higher pass completion rate and dribbles completed.

Tottenham’s participation in the Champions League this season, which Micah Richards believes might shock the squad, will require Conte to rotate his side in different competitions.

A combination of Bissouma and Hojbjerg in the middle of the pitch could quickly end up being the partnership Conte deploys in his toughest games as soon as the 25-year-old has settled in at his new club.
