'I'm sorry for the fans': £5m Leeds United player publicly apologises to supporters after yesterday's game

Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier has publicly apologised to supporters after yesterday’s game against Aston Villa

Jesse Marsch’s men held on to pick up an important point after playing nearly half of the game with 10 men.

Meslier has been ever present between the sticks for Leeds since making the £5 million switch from Lorient back in 2020 (Yorkshire Evening Post). And the Frenchman put in another impressive display yesterday as he kept Villa at bay.

Leeds struggled to get going after a month without playing a game due to postponements. The Whites did create some decent openings in the first-half though, with Rodrigo going close.

But Marsch criticised Gerrard’s Villa side for slowing the game down in the first-half, accusing them of time-wasting. And Meslier has now apologised to Leeds fans after a dull affair at Elland Road.

Speaking to LUTV after the game, Meslier was asked: “It was a game that never really had any flow, it didn’t really get going did it? It was stop, start, lots of free-kicks.”

“Yeah honestly, I’m sorry for the fans but of course, there were a lot of fouls,” Meslier answered.

“It was like you say, a cut game all the time and I think our problem, we want to put a lot of intensity when a team like Aston Villa tries to cut the rhythm of the game, it’s hard.”

It was certainly a slow game at Elland Road yesterday, but that was mainly down to the amount of fouls both sides committed.

Marsch has now accused both Everton and Villa of time-wasting at Elland Road. The American’s style of play relies on his team playing at a very high intensity and yesterday’s game just didn’t get going.

But Leeds will undoubtedly be happy to come away with a point after showing brilliant resolve in the second-half.
