‘I’m not good’: £27m Arsenal player says he knows he’s been playing poorly for the last month now

Arsenal defender William Saliba has told Viaplay Fotball that he knows he’s been playing poorly for the past month now.

The Gunners put in a five-star display against Nottingham Forest yesterday and went back above Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table.

Saliba has been a revelation for Mikel Arteta’s side ever since he returned from his loan spell at Marseille over the summer.

The £27 million man has arguably been one of the best defenders in the league and has been a standout performer in a high-flying Arsenal side.

Despite his brilliant start to the new campaign, Saliba claims that he has been nowhere near his best over the past four weeks.

Saliba says he’s been playing poorly

Speaking to Viaplay Fotball after yesterday’s 5-0 win over Forest, Saliba admitted that he needs to become more consistent for Arsenal.

“Yes for sure, since three or four weeks I’m not good. I know that,” he said.

“I work every day in training to be more consistent. I’m a new player but if I want to become a great defender, I have to work a lot and be more consistent.”

Saliba has been solid for Arsenal and completely transformed their backline so far this season.

Clinton Morrison praised the 21-year-old yesterday and labelled him a ‘Rolls-Royce’ defender.

The fact that Saliba feels he hasn’t been playing at his best over the past month should excite Arsenal fans. The Frenchman is clearly eager to develop into an even better defender than he already is.

Yesterday’s win at the Emirates was the perfect response from the Gunners after dropping points at Southampton last weekend.

Arteta’s side also fell to a 2-0 defeat in Holland on Thursday evening, but they responded in style yesterday.

Reiss Nelson replaced the injured Bukayo Saka before half-time and went on to score a brace.

Thomas Partey and Martin Odegaard got amongst the goals from midfield with two brilliant efforts.

Arsenal face a trip to Stamford Bridge next weekend and will be eager to make a statement away from home against a top six side in Chelsea.
