'I'm amazed': Graeme Souness cannot believe £45,000-a-week star wants to leave Arsenal this summer

Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness was really impressed with Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah against West Ham United yesterday.

The young Englishman started the season as the Gunners’ third-choice centre-forward. He was behind Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette in the pecking order, but things have changed over the last few weeks.

Nketiah was given a start against Southampton after Lacazette missed the game due to Covid-19. The £45,000-a-week Hale End graduate didn’t have a great game against the Saints, but he scored a brace against Chelsea in the following game and has been brilliant since.

Souness was blown away by Nketiah’s display against West Ham and he just can’t believe that the forward’s out of contract this summer and wants to leave Arsenal.

Graeme Souness: I’m amazed Arsenal star Eddie Nketiah is out of contract soon

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Souness said: “Arsenal were a good team today.

“Nketiah, I thought, was the best player on the pitch today. He was always threatening. He had a couple of shots when he came in with his right foot, made the goalkeeper work.

“He always wants to run forward, run forward for the ball. That stretches the defenders, becomes ideal for a midfield player.

“His contract’s about to run out, I’m amazed with that, I really am. He will not be short of teams wanting him. He was a threat throughout. I really like him, I thought, today, he was fabulous.

Nketiah wants to leave the Gunners

Nketiah revealed on The Beautiful Game podcast last month that Arsenal have offered him a new deal. However, he suggested that he wants out as he’s desperate for regular game time.

He said: “I am under contract until the end of the season but my deal runs out. Obviously, there have been talks and offers of a new [Arsenal] contract but at the moment my aim is to play football and play regularly. That is my ambition and that is what I hope to do.

“For me to get to the next step and get to where I think I can get to, I need to consider getting more minutes and playing. That is the thinking behind it.”

It is looking increasingly likely that Nketiah will leave Arsenal for free at the end of the season, which is a shame as he has shown over the last few weeks he’s more than good enough to play in the Premier League.

It will be interesting to see where Nketiah will end up if he leaves Arsenal this summer. A number of Premier League sides will likely make a move for him, maybe even West Ham, who could really do with a player like him.
