Illan Meslier moment of magic in Leeds draw overlooked amid errors
Plenty of Leeds United fans insisted that they were relieved to see Illan Meslier make his recent error while playing for his country rather than while between the sticks for Marcelo Bielsa’s side.
Meslier gifted Faroe Islands their equaliser against France’s under-21s on Monday. His underhit pass some 40 yards from goal allowed the visitors to finish into an empty net in the 1-1 draw.
But while some were able to look on the funny side of Meslier’s mistake, Leeds fans would perhaps be forgiven for having a couple of concerns.
Meslier has been an inspired signing since moving to Elland Road. But of course, expecting a 21-year-old goalkeeper to not have rough patches would be naive.
And with Leeds conceding a soft goal against Burnley in the final game before the international break, the truth probably is that some supporters are a little worried about his form.
In fairness to Meslier, Chris Wood’s touch at Turf Moor left him with barely any time to react.
But he did get a decent hand to the New Zealander’s deflection. So he will be disappointed to not keep the ball out.
It has not been the best spell for the Frenchman. But it has not been a disaster either.
Meslier generally dealt with Burnley crosses into his box superbly. In fact, he seems to have been even more commanding this season.
And one moment of brilliance from moments before Wood’s goal must not be overlooked when assessing Meslier’s form.
Meslier produced outrageous save before Leeds conceded goal at Burnley
The move started with a Burnley corner. And it appeared that it would end up with a James Tarkowski header finding the top corner.
However, Meslier somehow got across to the ball and managed to get fingertips on the attempt. He pushed the ball onto the bar and it bounced clear.
It was an absolutely outrageous save from the youngster. But because the ball ended up in the later some 15 seconds later, it has been somewhat forgotten.
Had Leeds cleared the ball properly after the save, all anyone would be talking about is the stop from Meslier.
It highlights how quickly the game changes. So while Meslier is currently having questions asked of him, it should be no surprise if he soon reminds everyone exactly why he is so highly rated.
