If ‘tremendous’ Tottenham Hotspur player doesn’t get more minutes soon, he might need to leave in January – opinion

Tottenham Hotspur have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, and find themselves a point behind leaders Arsenal.

Antonio Conte has his side playing some fantastic football, and look a tough outfit to beat.

The Italian manager has already established which players will be in his plans this season.

A number of his squad from last season were told they surplus to requirements over the summer.

The likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Sergio Reguilon and Giovani Lo Celso were frozen out by Conte.

Aside from a handful of youngsters, it seems that every player had a role in Conte’s squad.

However, several senior starts are yet to play more than a few minutes this season.

One of those players is defender Matt Doherty, might need to move in January if he doesn’t re-enter Conte’s plans.

Doherty might need January move

It’s been a frustrating start to the season for the Irish defender.

The 30-year-old had worked his way into Antonio Conte’s thinking at the end of last season.

However, he picked up a knee injury that saw him miss the final seven matches.

Conte admitted in pre-season that Doherty was working hard to get back to full fitness.

He was deemed fit enough to be involved on the opening day of the season, coming on for the final few minutes against Southampton.

He played a similar role at the end of their Champions League victory over Marseille.

Conte is willing to give Doherty some game time, but only when the result is no longer in doubt.

Conte’s right-back dilemma

The right wing-back was given an opportunity to leave Spurs in the summer, with West Ham interested in signing him.

However, the move never came to fruition with Doherty remaining at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There are reports that he hasn’t convinced Conte in training, and that’s why he hasn’t had a look in this season.

Tottenham are also oversubscribed with right-sided defenders at the moment.

Emerson Royal didn’t have the easiest start to his career in England.

However, the Brazilian has now ‘livened himself up’ and started every game this season.

Tottenham also signed Djed Spence from Middlesbrough this summer to compete for the right-back spot.

Spence has played even less minutes this season, coming on for a very late cameo against Nottingham Forest.

However, Conte has already described Spence as the ‘perfect prospect’, and is likely to want to keep a close eye on the England under-21 international.

Doherty therefore may need a move in January in order to start playing regularly again.

The ‘tremendous’ Irishman still has a lot to offer despite being out of favour at Tottenham.

Doherty is a competent defender; however, his strengths lie in his attacking contributions.

Always capable of popping up with a goal, Doherty is also a great crosser of the ball.

If Doherty doesn’t start playing soon, West Ham could do a lot worse than going back in for the 30-year-old.
