'Won't get a look in': Journalist thinks two Spurs players haven't convinced Conte in training
Journalist Paul Brown has suggested that Tottenham Hotspur boss Antonio Conte is still unconvinced by Matt Doherty and Djed Spence.
To date, Emerson Royal has started every game for Spurs this season, in the Premier League and Champions League.
Meanwhile, Doherty and Spence have made just two appearances between them in 2022-23.
Doherty’s only appearance of the season was as a late substitute against Southampton on the opening day.
Meanwhile, Spence’s solitary outing came in the closing stages at Nottingham Forest last month.
Doherty did well last season prior to his injury and Spence is a £20million signing from Middlesbrough.
Both would’ve surely fancied their chances of staking a starting claim, or at least get more game time than they have.
And while Emerson has done well defensively, his attacking output has come under some criticism.
Brown, writing on GiveMeSport, reckons that Emerson’s run in the Spurs side is more down to Doherty and Spence not giving enough rather than the Brazilian performing particularly well.
“Conte clearly wants to rotate those positions,” said Brown. “He always has done over the years, it’s been an area he regards in all of his teams.
“He likes to have two really good players in those positions that he can change without a drop off in quality.
“But he’s a ruthless manager and if you’re not doing it in training, you won’t get a look in.
“So, I can only imagine he doesn’t see enough at the moment from Doherty or Spence to put them in there.”
