Rio Ferdinand has admitted that he would be hammering Aaron Ramsdale if he was a teammate of the Arsenal goalkeeper.
Ferdinand was speaking to TNT Sports (broadcast on 25/11; 17:08) ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Brentford as he discussed his father doing a podcast where he spoke about the goalkeeper’s situation at the Emirates.
Aaron Ramsdale made his first Premier League appearance in almost three months on Saturday. With David Raya on loan from Brentford, the Spaniard was ineligible for the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium.
Rio Ferdinand says he’d hammer Aaron Ramsdale if he was Arsenal star’s teammate
Ramsdale’s situation at Arsenal has baffled many. Mikel Arteta decided to drop the goalkeeper after what appeared to be a superb run as number one.

Surprisingly, Ramsdale’s dad recently did an interview with the Highbury Squad podcast. And he spoke candidly about his son’s situation.
It is hard to imagine that the podcast did the 25-year-old any favours. And when asked about that before Saturday’s game, Rio Ferdinand suggested that he probably would have taken plenty of flak from his teammates.
“Can you imagine walking into training on the Monday after your dad’s been on a podcast? The abuse you’d get. I’d be hammering him. I’d be waiting there hammering the player,” he told TNT Sports.
Goalkeeper in an impossible position right now
Ramsdale is in a horrible situation right now. His decision to even applaud a save from David Raya was analysed earlier this season. He cannot escape the spotlight.
And that meant he was under the microscope when Arsenal faced Brentford on Saturday. Unfortunately, Ramsdale had a very shaky moment which nearly led to the Bees opening the scoring.
Perhaps why exactly Mikel Arteta decided to bring David Raya in will become apparent in the months and years ahead.
But what Saturday really showed is that Arteta took a big risk signing Raya in the summer. He may be vindicated in the end. But what he definitely looks to have done is quash Ramsdale’s confidence.
And if Raya cannot improve, the decision to replace his number one is going to really backfire on Arteta.
