Ian Wright so unimpressed with 22-year-old since Arsenal missed out on signing him

Although new signings are often the focus ahead of January, Ian Wright has now been discussing a target Arsenal previously missed out on.

Wright was speaking on the ‘Wright’s House’ podcast and will have caught the attention of Arsenal fans with some of his comments.

When speaking about Chelsea’s struggles this season, Wright couldn’t help but discuss the fortunes of Mykhaylo Mudryk this season.

Whilst he’s had some good moments, Mudryk has struggled on the whole, and isn’t showing too much evidence of why Arsenal were so interested in signing him in January.

Mikel Arteta seemed so convinced of his talent, and he may well still be, but Leandro Trossard does now look a much smarter signing.

And when discussing Mudryk’s woes, Wright actually didn’t seem too surprised.

He said: “Mudryk, he’s still playing exactly how I saw a couple of videos of him, Ukraine, when he’s doing his stuff, running 100 miles an hour, not slowing down.”

He continued: “If Mudryk goes through, [Nicolas] Jackson goes through, no matter how well they’ve got the ball through to them, I do not think they’re going to score.

“I’m watching from the outside watching that. If you’re a player and you’re playing in that team and you’re getting the pressure that Chelsea are getting on them, then you’re creating chances, and we’re talking good chances, and missing them, you’re demoralised.”

Ian Wright not impressed with former Arsenal target Mykhaylo Mudryk

Of course, it would be interesting to know if Mikel Arteta would still be interested in Mudryk should he come available.

That’s likely to remain a hypothetical situation, he’s on a long contract at Chelsea and probably wouldn’t represent value.

However, Arteta clearly saw huge potential, something he thought he could harness.

Perhaps the signing has similarities to that of Kai Havertz, a player who had lost his way in West London.

And although he was treated slightly unfairly in the past, Havertz is now thriving at his new side.

Ian Wright has often spoken well about Havertz during his time at Arsenal, protesting that he would make a good target man among other roles.

And Arteta is now starting to bear the fruit of his patience and determination.

However, we’ll never know whether Mudryk would have had a completely different trajectory at Arsenal or not.

A player who now seems to be making no progress at Chelsea.
