'I told everyone': Luka Modric is a massive fan of 27-year-old player Tottenham are looking at signing
Modric captained the Croatia side which came third at the World Cup and goalkeeper Livakovic was a big part of that run deep into the tournament.
He saved three penalties in the shootout win over Japan and produced heroics again in the quarter-final win over Brazil.
Livakovic was reportedly scouted by Tottenham during the tournament and after that Japan win, Modric made it clear how much he rates the 27-year-old.
Modric a fan of Livakovic
Modric told FIFA’s official website: “Plenty of teams have won the World Cup on penalties, they’re part of the game.
“Tonight Livakovic made three impressive saves.
“I’ve watched shoot-outs from the sidelines in the past and it’s not fun at all, I’d much rather be involved and be taking one.
“I never thought about it possibly being my last game for Croatia, because when it went to penalties I told everyone that Livakovic would save them.”
The same piece also said that Modric had a role in boosting Livakovic’s confidence and mentality before the tournament even started.
In an episode of FIFA series Captains, Modric is shown speaking one-to-one with Livakovic on the night before the final qualifying match against Russia.
Livakovic was dropped for that game, and Modric told the goalkeeper he does not give off an air of confidence, and the rest of the team picks up on that.
Mentality will be very important to any player that Antonio Conte signs to improve his squad as he looks ahead to replacing Hugo Lloris eventually.
