'I thought': Gareth Southgate makes claim about Arsenal's Bukayo Saka after his substitute appearance last night

England manager Gareth Southgate was really pleased with the impact Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka made off the bench last night.

Speaking to Hayters TV after the game, Southgate was over the moon with the ‘really good contribution’ Saka made.

The 21-year-old was replaced in England’s starting line-up by Luke Shaw after an unsuccessful stint at left wing-back.

Saka was brought on to replace Phil Foden with England trailing 1-0 to Germany.

A mistake from Harry Maguire immediately helped the visitors double their lead after a fantastic finish from Kai Havertz.

England rallied and scored three goals in quick succession.

Saka combined with fellow substitute Mason Mount to equalise after Shaw pulled a goal back.

Harry Kane scored an emphatic penalty to nearly secure an unlikely victory before a Nick Pope error gifted Germany a late equaliser.

Southgate was really pleased with Saka

Speaking after the match, Southgate said: “We score and the roof nearly lifts off, we all suddenly remember what it feels like to watch a goal go in and then we had really good momentum in the game.

“Then I thought Bukayo (Saka) and Mason (Mount) had really good contributions.

“I thought Jude (Bellingham) was outstanding through the whole game.

“Luke Shaw considering how little football he has had, had a really positive night, then we get a punch on the nose at the end which is how it’s going at the end!”

Saka has certainly given Southgate something to think about between now and the start of the World Cup.

Southgate started with Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling as his two wide players for both games in this break.

However, they both struggled to make any sort of impact, and wasted plenty of chances.

Saka and Mount’s introduction lifted the rest of the team, and England played much more positively when they came on.

Jude Bellingham even compared Saka to a certain Lionel Messi after the match.

It’s no wonder Southgate was so pleased with Saka’s contribution.

The Arsenal winger has been in fine form at club level, and if that continues for the next seven weeks, it’ll be very hard not to start him in Qatar.
