The Villains fell to a third defeat of the season on Sunday, losing 1-0 to previously pointless West Ham.
It leaves Aston Villa one point above the relegation zone at this early stage of the season.
McCoist believes the club won’t struggle this season, and that manager Steven Gerrard should be given time at Villa Park: “If they win that game they could be 7th, it’s one of those games that could have gone either way.
“I understand the frustration of a lot of Villa fans, I get it, but if you’re asking for any knee jerk reactions, I don’t really know.
“I’m looking at the team, and I like the look of the team, there’s some great players in there, (Philippe) Coutinho, I like (Ollie) Watkins and obviously Danny Ings up front, (John) McGinn is a good player, they’re maybe just not firing yet.
“But, I think they’ll be all right, I really do.
“When I say I think they’ll be all right, I think they’ll be mid-table or I don’t see them seventh, I don’t see them top six.

“They might get an eighth or something like that, I think that’s where Villa are.
“I don’t see a massive improvement in Villa, but I do think they’ll be all right, I don’t think they’ll struggle this year.
“At this early stage there should be a little bit of understanding, and people should be given time.”
McCoist predicts Villa season prediction
It’s an underwhelming prediction from McCoist for Villa fans, who would be hoping to look further up the table this season.
Steven Gerrard has had a mixed start to life at Villa Park, leading the club to a 14th place finish last season.
He’s been backed in the transfer window this summer, with five new signings arriving at the club.

However, Diego Carlos has already picked up a serious injury, and Philippe Coutinho has also been short of full fitness.
Gerrard wants further additions in defence, and with his forwards not performing at the level they’re capable of in front of goal, he’ll be disappointed a move for Ismaila Sarr didn’t get over the line.
Aston Villa are eighth in the league for their total wage bill, and so a finish outside the top half this season would be disappointing.
Gerrard should be given time to turn things around but McCoist’s prediction of a mid-table finish might not be enough for some fans.
