'I can count on him': Conte says 21-year-old Tottenham talent is so 'important' to the team

Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte has described Oliver Skipp as an “important” player for Spurs.

The Tottenham boss has also backed the midfielder to really get going once he returns to peak physical fitness.

Skipp is coming back off a series of injuries which have kept him out of competitive action since January.

The 21-year-old was previously out with a groin injury, for which he underwent surgery in April.

Skipp then suffered a foot injury in training ahead of the start of Tottenham’s season.

The ‘freak injury’ apparently left Spurs players shaken and the youngster had to have stitches in his foot.

Skipp has been on the mend in recent weeks, returning to training, and has made the bench four times this term.

“He is very reliable”

Ahead of Tottenham hosting Leicester in the Premier League on Saturday, Conte held his pre-match press conference.

The Spurs boss provided an update on Skipp’s fitness to football.london, and also lauded the player’s talents and attitude.

After speaking about Matt Doherty’s road to recovery, Conte added: “It is the same with Skippy.

“Because in this period, Skippy had a serious injury. He played his last game in January, maybe December.

“Don’t forget Skippy. He is very reliable, he’s a prospect but I can count on him. He’s an important player.

“In the next few games he can have a better physical condition and I can count on him also.”

Skipp has been unlucky in terms of injuries since Conte took over as Spurs boss last November.

The Tottenham academy product was a mainstay in the Italian’s side last season until he was ruled out for the rest of the campaign.

Skipp was reportedly ‘absolutely flying’ during pre-season training and was in the top two fittest players in the entire Spurs squad

But injury halted his progress and now the youngster will have to play catch-up to break back into the side.

Nonetheless, Conte is clearly a big fan, and hopefully it won’t be long before we see Skipp in competitive action again.
