How the tables turn as Jose Mourinho’s 2015 dig at Arsenal now fits Chelsea

Jose Mourinho has often aimed jibes at Arsenal over the years.

The 63-year-old famously called Arsene Wenger a “specialist in failure” in 2014 after Arsenal went nine years without winning a trophy under the Frenchman.

Mourinho also called the Gunners a “boring” club back in 2015 – on the basis of Arsenal going a decade without winning the Premier League title.

After Arsenal fans chanted “boring, boring Chelsea” during a 0-0 draw between the two sides in April 2015, the man born in Setubal said: “Boring is ten years without winning a Premier League title. That is boring.”

Now, the shoe is firmly on the other foot.

Chelsea now close to the very same position Jose Mourinho deemed “boring”

Not since 2017 have Chelsea won the Premier League title.

Barring a shock 2026/27 season under the guidance of Xabi Alonso – who could sign Edmond Tapsoba – the Blues are highly unlikely to become champions of England considering they currently sit eighth.

It signals a stark turnaround to the days where Mourinho could confidently sit before reporters at Stamford Bridge and mock others for their lack of success – the tables have well and truly turned when it comes to Arsenal and Chelsea.

The Gunners are now Premier League champions after finally seeing off Manchester City in a title race, whereas Chelsea could even finish in the bottom half depending on how results pan out on the final day.

Not only that, but Arsenal – who banked £180m for winning the Premier League – could even become champions of Europe should they overcome PSG in Budapest on Saturday 30th May.

That would arguably be the most painful development for Chelsea, considering the Blues can currently lay claim to being the only football club in London to have won the UEFA Champions League.

Over a decade on from Mourinho calling Arsenal “boring” for going ten years without a Premier League title, Chelsea are now just 12 months away from doing the exact same.
