Tottenham have now announced the £52m signing of Xavi Simons from RB Leipzig.
The Netherlands international takes the No.7 shirt at Spurs following the departure of Heung-min Son, and is understood to have penned a contract running until June 2032.
TBR Football understand Simons had agreed terms with Chelsea earlier this summer.
However, the Dutchman grew impatient after the Blues then stalled over the deal.
Xavi Simons made 78 appearances in total for RB Leipzig – and the Bundesliga side’s fanbase have reacted in telling fashion after his move to Tottenham was confirmed.
Some RB Leipzig fans claim Xavi Simons is their greatest player
RB Leipzig were only founded in May 2009 – over 16 years ago – but in that space of time, a handful of fans feel Simons is the best to ever pull on the shirt.
One supporter wrote on X (previously known as Twitter): “Thank you for letting us be part of your story. You were arguably the best player we’ve ever seen in Leipzig. All the best.”
Another echoed that sentiment, posting: “I could cry. Xavi is the best RB player of all time and we’re selling him for just 60 million euros. This must be a bad nightmare.”
A third RB Leipzig fan made an interesting point about his relationship with Lois Openda – who Aston Villa like – on the pitch.
They wrote: “Thank you and see you later!! Your combo with Openda was the best, and I wish we could’ve won more trophies together.”
The Belgian is a rapid forward who likes to run in behind, so the fact Simons clicked well with him bodes well for the likes of Mohammed Kudus and Brennan Johnson at Tottenham, given their notable speed.
Furthermore, a fourth RB Leipzig supporter repeated the thoughts of those above, claiming that Simons is undoubtedly the best to ever play for the club – also making a claim about Nick Woltemade, who is heading for Newcastle in a £65m move.
They commented: “What a failure of a board! Everyone out! Xavi is the best player in the club’s history, and you sell him for less than Stuttgart got for the wooden foot Woltemade!”
On the account of these posts, Tottenham may well have struck gold with the 22-year-old.
Which positions can Thomas Frank use Xavi Simons in at Spurs?
Not only have Tottenham signed a player who fans claim to be the best RB Leipzig have ever employed, but he is also incredibly versatile.
| Position | Games | Goals | Assists |
|---|---|---|---|
| Left Winger | 59 | 18 | 17 |
| Attacking Midfield | 42 | 19 | 12 |
| Right Winger | 27 | 7 | 6 |
| Striker | 10 | 5 | 6 |
| Central Midfield | 6 | 1 | 1 |
| Left Midfield | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| Second Striker | 1 | 0 | 0 |
Throughout his career, Simons has played in the heart of midfield, on the left and right flank, as well as even leading the attack in a No.9 role across spells at PSG, PSV Eindhoven and RB Leipzig.
As you can see, a central attacking midfield role seems to suit the Dutchman best, or out on the left where he can cut inside on his stronger right foot.
At the age of just 22 – with plenty of experience already banked and immense versatility – Simons could prove to be a brilliant signing for Tottenham.
