'Hopefully I'm wrong': Glen Johnson says West Ham should have signed 'incredible' striker instead of Scamacca
Pundit Glen Johnson says his former club West Ham United should have signed Armando Broja instead of Gianluca Scamacca.
Scamacca’s arrival in east London was confirmed last night as David Moyes finally got in some reinforcements for his forward line.
A new hitman who can share some of the burden with Michail Antonio was much needed and long overdue, especially with European football at the London Stadium once again next term.
But in an interview with GGRecon, Johnson says that Broja, who was also a target for the Hammers this summer, would have been the better signing.
West Ham should have signed Broja over Scamacca
He said: “I would have potentially opted for Armando Broja over Gianluca Scamacca.
“But it is exciting that West Ham are spending that sort of money on a striker. Scamacca is going to have to deliver.
“I would have only opted for Broja because he’s got Premier League experience already but hopefully I’m wrong and he can smash in 25 goals.”
Broja did impress with Southampton last season, where his pace was described as ‘incredible‘ and he does look to have a big future at Premier League level.
Scamacca comes with a big reputation from Italy, but Romelu Lukaku struggled to replicate his Serie A form in the Premier League last term and has since gone back.
The Italian is perhaps more of a risk, but it could well come good and that is what Moyes has to hope for after finally getting a new frontman.
