He’s not Schmeichel, but Man United goalkeeper Senne Lammens once scored an incredible goal

Ruben Amorim has tried his best to downplay comparisons between Peter Schmeichel and Manchester United’s new goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Lammens has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Old Trafford, after ousting Altay Bayindir from between the sticks and keeping a clean sheet against Sunderland on his first start.

Ben Foster is surprised United signed him over Emi Martinez and Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the £18million deal with Royal Antwerp is looking like one of the steals of the summer.

Man United supporters were quick to strike up a chant likening him to Peter Schmeichel, and while he certainly has some way to go to live up to that tag, he has already matched him in one bizarre area.

Senne Lammens scored a goal for Club Brugge

Ironically, while United have been blunt up front in recent seasons, Senne Lammens once showed them exactly how it should be done despite playing in goal.

Aged 17, the stopper turned out for Club Brugge’s reserve side in a UEFA Youth League group stage match against Real Madrid back in 2019.

The stakes were high, with Brugge needing a result to progress to the knockout stages. However, with just seconds remaining, they found themselves trailing 2-1.

Step forward, Lammens. A corner in the dying stages was whipped into the penalty area, and the goalkeeper rose to meet it, having been given permission to rush forward.

Standing at 6ft 4in, he planted his head on the cross and guided it expertly into the back of the net, sparking scenes of jubilation and sending his side through to the next round.

Luke Shaw has been impressed with Lammens’ early impact, and should United similarly find themselves on the cusp in the future, perhaps they can rely on him to bail them out, too.

Senne Lammens became a goalkeeper to ‘avoid running’

According to Lammens’ older brother, Tom, the stopper first found his calling in goal after trying to avoid running and being substituted during games in his youth.

He played the first few years of his burgeoning career as a striker, explaining how he was able to score his brilliant goal against Real Madrid, but he eventually changed his position at age 10.

Speaking to The Athletic about Lammens’ decision to become a goalkeeper, Tom said: “Mainly because he didn’t want to get substituted. He also didn’t like all the running in training.

“As a player, he was always quite tall and strong for his age, and had a powerful shot.”
