Danny Murphy has claimed that Everton centre-back James Tarkowski is the best English player in his position right now.

It was arguably Everton’s best performance of the season and lifts them to 11th place in the Premier League.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin opened his account for the season in the first-half, before Anthony Gordon and Dwight McNeil made sure of the result.

It was the performance of Tarkowski that stood out for Murphy after the match.

The 29-year-old defender kept helped the Toffees keep their third clean sheet of the season.

And Murphy now believes that Tarkowski is the best English centre-back playing regularly right now.

Tarkowski is England’s best centre-back – Murphy

Murphy was analysing Everton’s performance after a comfortable win over Patrick Vieira’s side.

The BBC pundit highlighted Tarkowski’s contribution on Match of the Day (22/10 11:18pm), saying: “Tarkowski for me has been a brilliant addition.

“(Tarkowski was) very sensible in waiting there are not diving in (on Jean-Philippe Mateta).

“He protects the goal, and when he gets a little bit of cover, then he makes the tackle.

“He for me, at the moment, is the best English centre-half we have who’s playing regularly, he’s been that good.”

Tarkowski has formed a brilliant partnership with fellow new signing Conor Coady.

Coady has already stated how much he loves playing with the former Burnley man.

He’s been described by Alan Shearer as a ‘tower of strength’ in the middle of Everton’s defence.

Tarkowski has just four more potential opportunities to improve Gareth Southgate before the season breaks for the World Cup.

Martin Keown followed up Murphy’s comments, and suggested he still had doubts about his international credentials.

“I don’t think he’s (Southgate’s) going to go with him.

“For me maybe, I just look at his pace. I don’t want to take anything away from him as I know he’s been outstanding.”

However, Tarkowski is certainly endearing himself to the Everton faithful, who will be glad to hear he’s considered one of England’s best centre-backs.
