Alan Shearer says Everton have a player who's a real 'tower of strength' in their ranks

Everton duo James Tarkowski and Alex Iwobi have made Alan Shearer’s latest Premier League Team of the Week.

Frank Lampard’s Toffees picked up their first top-flight win of the season at the weekend.

Everton hosted West Ham at Goodison Park on Sunday and ran out 1-0 winners over the Londoners.

Neal Maupay, who joined the Blues in summer, opened his account for his new side in the 53rd minute.

The 26-year-old struck with a half-volley from just inside the area in front of the Gwladys Street End.

Impressive weekend displays from Jack Grealish, Gabriel Jesus and Son Heung-min meant Maupay missed out on Shearer’s XI.

However, Tarkowski and Iwobi featured in the side on the left side of a three-man defence and four-man midfield respectively.

Shearer, writing on the Premier League website, described the defender as “a tower of strength at the back for Everton.”

Meanwhile, Iwobi delivered a “much-improved performance and set up the winning goal”.

“Bright and breezy”

The Liverpool Echo gave Tarkowski an 8 out of 10 for his efforts on the day.

“Everton’s rock at the back,” they wrote. “He helped steady the ship and get his captain Coady out of jail after he trod on the ball and made several timely interceptions.”

Iwobi also got 8 out of 10.

“Bright and breezy getting into the pockets of space in the engine room, he provided the assist for Maupay’s goal with a well-placed pass to the new boy on the edge of the area,” they wrote.
