‘He’s a talent’: Xherdan Shaqiri has been so impressed with 18-year-old Liverpool target

Liverpool fans will fondly remember Xherdan Shaqiri’s many cameos at Anfield over the years.

The Swiss international spent three seasons at Liverpool, and helped them win a Premier League and Champions League.

Shaqiri has spoken to The Athletic and enjoyed talking about his previous club.

The stocky winger left Liverpool last year to join Olympique Lyon.

However, his time in France lasted less than a year, and he’s now swapped Ligue 1 for MLS.

Shaqiri admitted he still has a in Manchester and goes back to watch the club when he can.

If a report from Goal is to be believed, he could end up going back to Anfield to watch one of his current teammates.

Goal believe that Liverpool are interested in Chicago Fire youngster Jhon Duran.

The 18-year-old Colombian international has been a regular for the Fire this season, and has even outscored Shaqiri.

Shaqiri has been impressed with Duran, but wonders if it might be too early for him to make the move to Europe.

Speaking to the Athletic about the teenager, Shaqiri said: “Still so young and needs to learn a lot of things but a very good player.

“He has the qualities to one day play at a good club in Europe. When? He needs playing time.

“That’s important for a young player to get better. If you go to Europe and don’t play so much, it can be difficult.

“We know in Europe it’s another level. There are issues you have to deal with.

“He’s a talent. I hope one day he’ll make that step and show himself in Europe.”

Liverpool fans might be getting excited about the arrival of Duran if he can emulate another high-profile arrival from the USA.

One of the Premier League’s most in-form players, Miguel Almiron, was signed by Newcastle from Atlanta United.

Shaqiri has been impressed with Duran, but if he does sign for Liverpool, he might have to hit the ground running faster than Almiron.

Duran made his Colombia debut this year, and may feel slightly hard done by that he hasn’t been included in their World Cup squad.

At 18, he’s got plenty of time to play on the biggest stage, and his development has to be his main focus right now.
