'He really was terrible': BBC pundit shocked by how badly 27-year-old Newcastle United target played yesterday

Chris Sutton has told BBC Radio 5 Live that he was shocked by how badly reported Newcastle United target Josip Juranovic played for Celtic yesterday.

Eddie Howe will be aiming to keep his side in the fight for Champions League football over the next few months after a brilliant start to the season.

Newcastle currently sit third in the table and haven’t tasted defeat since August, but the January transfer window offers them a good opportunity to bolster Howe’s squad for the business end of the season.

The Sunday Post reported last month that the Magpies are eyeing a possible move for Celtic star Juranovic

The Croatian right-back impressed at the World Cup as he helped Zlatko Dalic’s side to a third-place finish. But Sutton certainly wasn’t impressed with the 27-year-old’s display in the Old Firm Derby yesterday.

Sutton shocked by Juranovic

Celtic managed to rescue a point at the Ibrox yesterday after being 2-1 down for the majority of the second-half.

Juranovic was introduced into the action around the 70th minute mark but Sutton slammed the defender for his cameo display.

He told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Juranovic who played in a World Cup semi-final looked like he had been on a stag do for a couple of weeks after he came on.

“He was awful, he’s been linked with Barcelona and Chelsea and you’re thinking blimey, what a display! He really was terrible.”

Juranovic played a key role in Croatia’s World Cup run and started every single game apart from the third place play-off.

He’s been a standout performer for the Hoops but clearly needs to get back up to full speed after his campaign in Qatar.

The right-back has been attracting interest from the likes of Barcelona and Atletico Madrid off the back of his World Cup displays, so he can’t be a bad player.

Newcastle are short of options at right-back and will need to find quality competition for Kieran Trippier. The Englishman has been exceptional this season but an injury could leave Howe in a difficult position.

Juranovic would certainly fit the bill and despite Sutton’s criticism, he’s shown he is a very capable full-back in Scotland.
