‘He keeps saying’: Matt Doherty shares what 23-year-old Tottenham man was annoyed with him about after Marseille game

Matt Doherty has been speaking to Tottenham Hotspur’s official website and has shared what Japhet Tanganga was annoyed with him about after the Marseille game.

Spurs got off to a winning start in the Champions League last night after a 2-0 win over the Ligue 1 outfit.

Both Doherty and Tanganga were introduced as second-half substitutes during the game.

But a chance did fall to Doherty despite only being on the pitch for less than 10 minutes.

The Irish defender was played through by Dejan Kulusevski in the 92nd minute but dragged his shot wide.

And Tanganga feels that Doherty should have passed to him after the 23-year-old had made an overlapping run.

Doherty shares what Tanganga was annoyed with him about

Speaking to Spurs Play, Doherty was asked about his opportunity to grab a goal on his Champions league debut

The 30-year-old said: “Yeah I know.”

But Tanganga can be heard saying: “You could have squared it to me though.”

Doherty laughed and responded: “He keeps saying that I should have slid him in but I don’t know. I’m a bit rusty, I can’t see the full picture yet!”

“Looking at the [Sporting] Lisbon game, they obviously won in the end.

“And just for the feel-good factor around the place, you want to get off to a great start. It wasn’t easy out there but we ground it out and got the win.”

It certainly wasn’t plain-sailing for Antonio Conte’s men as they struggled in the first-half.

But an early Marseille red card in the second-half helped Spurs to dominate the game.

Richarlison was the hero on the night as he bagged two goals to earn Spurs three points in their first group game.

And Doherty has praised Richarlison for his displays after waiting patiently for his opportunity to start.

“He’s [Richarlison] obviously a top player and he’s had to wait his time. Sonny [Heung-Min Son], Harry Kane and [Dejan] Kulusevski have obviously been so good since last season.

“Obviously he’s emotional as he’s come in and scored a couple of goals today and I’m sure his family and friends were in the stands, so it was a great night for him.”

Conte will be delighted to have earned three points in Spurs’ first group game, but will be expecting more from his side in terms of their level of performance.

Tottenham face a trip to Manchester City this weekend and will certainly need to raise their levels if they are to earn a result on Saturday evening.
