‘He has to be carried’: Pundit says £45m Tottenham player is always relying on his teammates

James Maddison has been one of the best players in the Premier League for Tottenham this season.

The midfielder has been absolutely excellent since joining Spurs in the summer. He’s made an impact in almost every single game he’s played this season, and it’s been hard to pick out any negatives in his game.

However, as always, you’re often going to have your critics, and speaking on The Stand with Eamon Dunphy, John Giles has picked out an issue in Maddison’s game.

The pundit stated that while he is a fan of Maddison, he thinks he’s a player who has to be in a good team if he is to shine, claiming that he’s often carried by his teammates to these good performances.

Maddison is carried

Giles shared his verdict on the £45m man.

“He’s not a midfield player, he’s one of those lads who floats between the midfield and the attackers. At Leicester he wasn’t in a good team. He has to be in a good team to do what he’s good at, he has to be carried a lot to score spectacular goals and score a few goals. This manager is getting the best out of him because he’s playing him in the right position. He’s unique in the way he can do it, and he definitely has the ability to score goals. He’s playing much better than I ever expected him to play,” Giles said.

No chance

We have to disagree with this view.

If there’s any player in this Tottenham team who isn’t carried through teams, it’s Maddison.

Maddison is one of the only players at Spurs who can create something out of nothing. He steps up when everything else is looking dour, and he’s been doing this for years for Leicester City too.

Maddison isn’t the type of player who is carred by his teammates, quite the opposite, he’s often the player carrying the team.
