‘I have to give credit’…Sammy Lee says £30m Liverpool showed how much he’d improved against Manchester United

Liverpool were beaten by Manchester United in a 4-3 thriller yesterday.

The Reds looked to have got it won in extra-time when Harvey Elliott’s deflected effort beat Andre Onana in the United goal. However, late strikes from Marcus Rashford and then Amad Diallo ensured a huge win for Erik ten Hag’s side.

In the end, Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was beaten by Diallo’s low strike and it was one he probably felt he should have done better with.

But speaking about Kelleher, former Reds assistant Sammy Lee still found time to praise the Irish stopper.

Caoimhin Kelleher shows his improvement against Manchester United

Despite ending up on the losing side and conceding four, former Reds assistant Lee believed Kelleher actually kept Liverpool in the game and showed his improvement.

“I have to give credit to our ‘keeper at that time as well. He kept us in the game with one fantastic save from McTominay’s second attempt. He made three or four fantastic saves throughout the game did Kelleher and it’s a testament to just how much he has improved,” Lee said on the Official Liverpool Podcast.

Kelleher faces a big summer

Liverpool are lucky in the fact they have two excellent goalkeepers in the ranks at the moment.

As we all know, Alisson is a superb stopper and has rightfully been number one for some time.

Kelleher, though, is good enough himself to be number one and amid rumours of a potential move to Celtic, the £30m-rated stopper faces a crunch summer.

The Ireland international is at a point where regular football probably serves him better than being the Liverpool number two. But even then, it’s a big decision to make to leave such a club.

As Lee says here, Kelleher has shown his quality and improvement and whoever the new Liverpool manager is will not want to lose such a talent.

The summer window, then, could be massive in the career of the goalkeeper.
