Leeds United’s under-21 coach Michael Skubala was really impressed with young attacker Mateo Joseph.

Speaking to Leeds Live after the match, Skubala lauded his captain on the night as his Leeds side beat Tranmere Rovers 5-3 in the Papa John’s Trophy.

Joseph was one of the names on the score sheet as Skubala named a very attacking line-up.

Joe Gelhardt was included after being omitted from Jesse Marsch’s matchday squad on Sunday, and scored a brace.

There were also goals for Sonny Perkins and Cody Drameh, with Sam Greenwood sent off after 70 minutes.

Skubala was really impressed with Joseph’s performance, particularly his work rate.

“Mateo is in a place where he’s running hard, pressing and he gives everything for the team.” Skubala said.

“He was captain tonight because of those attributes that I really value.”

Skubala really impressed with Joseph

Joseph has had a fantastic start to the season with Leeds’ under-21 side.

The 18-year-old forward has already scored nine goals this season, and appears to be in competition with Perkins for top goal scorer.

Perkins sits one behind him on eight, and both youngsters have caught the eye of Jesse Marsch.

There are few clubs in the Premier League that can boast an academy with more attacking talent than Leeds.

As well as all the youngsters already mentioned, the arrival of Wilfried Gnonto in the summer gives Marsch another option.

Joseph has already impressed some of his senior teammates with his performances this season.

Being handed the armband in a team containing several players involved with the first team is also a massive compliment.

Joseph’s work-rate will make him stand out to Leeds’ first-team staff as well.

A staple of Leeds’ current style is working hard in and out of possession, and Joseph would slot straight in.

Mateo Joseph clearly has a big future ahead of him, and Skubala was impressed by his performance again last night.
