‘Hasn’t turned up’: Chris Sutton believes one player has really let Steven Gerrard down at Aston Villa

Chris Sutton believes that Philippe Coutinho has let down Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard since signing this summer.

Sutton was speaking on The Monday Night Club about Villa’s current predicament.

Villa lost their most recent match against Chelsea on Sunday, but Gerrard’s side put in a good performance.

A mistake from Tyrone Mings gifted Mason Mount an early goal before he doubled his tally with a free-kick.

Emiliano Martinez would have hoped to do better for the second goal, and Villa are once again looking over their shoulders.

Coutinho was a second-half substitute, but failed to make any sort of impact as the Villains fell to a fifth defeat of the season.

They face Fulham tomorrow in what could be a massive game for Gerrard’s future at the club.

Former Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with a move to Villa Park.

Gerrard lost one of his key players and biggest summer signings to injury after just two games this season.

Diego Carlos’ absence has certainly been felt, but the form of many of Villa’s players, including Coutinho, has let Gerrard down.

Sutton believes Gerrard would be disappointed with the impact Coutinho has made so far this season.

“I’m not advocating for Villa to sack Steven Gerrard but he’s hung his hat on Philippe Coutinho,” Sutton said.

“He was the big signing, the guy who was going to change everything at Villa and he hasn’t turned up for him.

Coutinho’s loan deal from Barcelona last season was fantastic, and convinced Villa to spend £17m on the Brazilian in the summer.

He’s struggled to make the necessary impact this season though, and has yet to register a goal or assist this season.

He’s not alone in struggling to finish his chances in front of goal, as no Villa player has scored more than once this season.

Coutinho has produced 17 shot creating actions this season, as per FBRef, with only Ollie Watkins and Jacob Ramsey creating more.

He’s creating chances for his teammates, but at a slower rate than last season, and the chances are worse quality.

Sutton believes Coutinho has let Gerrard down this season, and Garth Crooks believes the Brazilian has ‘lost interest’ at Villa.
