Journalist Dean Jones has told Give Me Sport that he understands that Mauricio Pochettino would be interested in the Aston Villa job should Steven Gerrard get the sack.
Gerrard appears to be in a precarious situation at Villa Park. The Villans are one point above the bottom three in the Premier League table. And they have been poor for some time now.

The Telegraph reported this week that Villa are considering their options. Unai Emery and Thomas Tuchel would come under consideration if a change is made.
But the name at the top of their wishlist is Pochettino. The Argentinian is available after leaving Paris Saint-Germain at the end of last season.

It is difficult to know what to make of the interest of Pochettino. Obviously, he won the league title with PSG. And he reached the Champions League final with Tottenham before that.
Pochettino interested in Aston Villa job
But his managerial stock probably fell during his time at Parc des Princes. It did not appear to be a happy time in Pochettino’s managerial career.
So perhaps he would be open to taking on another project with his next role. In fact, Jones believes that Pochettino is open to taking over with the Villans.
“It might not be ethical to go digging for a new manager while the other one is still in place,” he told Give Me Sport.
“But we’ve said for a while that we understand Pochettino is interested in this job. That is, for me, something that Aston Villa cannot ignore.”
Pochettino would be an exciting appointment for Villa if they do decide to replace Gerrard. He elevated both Southampton and Spurs during his tenures at those respective clubs. And he has been described as an ‘outstanding‘ manager.
Villa have enormous potential. And it does appear that their squad should be doing a lot better than they currently are.
That is not all down to Gerrard. And it would be incredibly unfair to suggest that. But sometimes a different voice is all it takes to end a rut.
