Harry Kane makes Kalvin Phillips claim
Harry Kane has told Gary Neville on The Overlap that Kalvin Phillips is as fit as they come as he lauded the way the Leeds United star has adapted to playing for England.
Phillips has enjoyed an outstanding year as the fulcrum of Marcelo Bielsa’s plans at Elland Road.
He has taken the step up to the Premier League and international football in his stride. And he now looks set to be a part of the England squad that will contest Euro 2020 this summer.
Kane was asked about some of his Three Lions teammates by Neville ahead of the tournament, and he suggested that he was hugely impressed by Phillips’s form, as well as his fitness.
“He’s done really well. Again, great lad, works really hard. I think at Leeds they have some mad training regime,” he told The Overlap.
“Yeah, he said there’s one, I forget what they call it now, but it’s two pitches together and they play 11 v 11 and it’s literally just man for man on two pitches.
“It’s no wonder he’s as fit as they come.”
Harry Kane lauding Kalvin Phillips unthinkable just a few years ago
While Leeds fans will not have been surprised by the way Phillips has played this season, there is no question that few would have seen his rise coming a few years back.
He was certainly showing promise at Elland Road. He scored seven times in the season before Bielsa’s arrival.
However, he never quite managed to convince all of his doubters that he was good enough to be a regular fixture in a Leeds side struggling in the Championship.
Indeed, had Leeds fans been asked who their big midfield prospect was back then, many would have surely opted for Ronaldo Vieira.
But Bielsa has transformed Phillips’s game.
But Bielsa seeing a holding midfielder in the Leeds academy graduate was pure genius.
