Eric Dier was left out of Gareth Southgate’s most recent England squad for the start of the Nations League campaign.
That decision has drawn criticism from many quarters, with Spurs coach Ryan Mason stating that Dier has been the Premier League’s best English centre-back this season.
As per the Times, Harry Kane was asked about Dier’s omission ahead of today’s clash with Hungary and trod the line between backing his manager and his club teammate.

Kane reacts as Dier is left out of England squad
“I’m really close with Eric, he’s a fantastic player, he’s had a really good season, probably the best season he’s had in terms of being consistent over a long period of time, staying fit and healthy,” Kane said.
“He really fitted into Antonio’s system [Conte’s 3-4-3] really well and put in some great performances.
“He was a big reason we got Champions League football [next season], but obviously the squad selection is always down to the manager and it is his decision. I’m sure Eric’s knocking on the door, close to getting that call-up again.
“All he has to do is keep working hard, keep doing what he is doing. There’s another camp in September and then the World Cup so I’m sure he’ll have one eye on that to try to impress the manager.”

When Dier was a fixture in the England squad, there were many critics who said he should not be and criticised Southgate’s loyalty to him.
Now, he has had a good season at Spurs and plenty are saying that he should be in the Three Lions’ plans with Qatar on the horizon.
Time will tell whether Dier forces his way back into England’s plans before the World Cup, but the good news for Spurs is that he gets a longer break before pre-season starts.
