Everton manager Frank Lampard has admitted that midfielder Amadou Onana played through an injury yesterday.

The Toffees fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Leicester City yesterday, after goals from Youri Tielemans and Harvey Barnes.

Lampard was disappointed after the match, and spoke to the club’s official website to reflect on the performance.

The result won’t be the only thing that concerned Lampard yesterday, with a number of players limping off with injuries.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s fitness has been a long-term issue at Everton, and he once again was forced off with a hamstring issue.

Idrissa Gueye only managed to play half the match before being brought off at half-time.

Onana managed to reach the hour mark before he was replaced by Abdoulaye Doucoure.

However, Lampard admitted after the match that Onana was playing through an injury yesterday before being substituted.

Speaking after the game, Lampard gave more details about Onana’s fitness issue.

“With Amadou, I just think it was more of a sprained ankle, which he actually had in training yesterday, and then he took a couple of knocks in the game and had to come off for it,” Lampard said.

The £33m midfielder has been a revelation since arriving at Goodison Park in the summer.

He’s formed a fantastic partnership with Gueye, and Jamie Redknapp has said that there’s no limits to how good he could be.

Onana will be hoping that his ankle injury isn’t too seriously given he’s got a good chance of going to the World Cup with Belgium.

Martinez has admitted in the build-up to the tournament in Qatar that he’s been seriously impressed with the 21-year-old.

Lampard’s decision to play Onana despite the injury he picked up in training shows how important he is to the side.

If both he and Gueye are now unavailable, it seriously weakens Everton’s midfield.

Everton fans will be praying for positive news from the scans on all three players who went off with injuries yesterday.
