'Great player’: Roberto Firmino names £220k-a-week Liverpool man as the toughest he’s ever played against

Liverpool forward Roberto Firmino has been selecting his ultimate five-a-side team.

In an interview with Viaplay Fotball, Firmino thought long and hard about who would make it into his line-up.

There was certainly a Brazilian bias, with Fabinho, Alisson Becker and Philippe Coutinho all selected.

The forward was then asked who he wanted to play at the back in his side.

Firmino selected Virgil van Dijk, and commented that he thought he was the best defender he’s ever played against.

It’s hardly a surprise that Firmino thinks this given Van Dijk’s performances over the past few years.

The Dutchman has transformed Jurgen Klopp’s side, and although he doesn’t wear the captain’s armband, is certainly a leader in the squad.

Firmino has played against Van Dijk four times in his career while the defender was at Southampton.

Van Dijk denied Firmino on every occasion, and it’s no surprise he thinks he’s the best defender he’s played against.

Firmino full of praise for Van DIjk

Speaking to Viaplay Fotball, Firmino said: “The second player I will choose is Virgil van Dijk.

“He’s a great friend of mine here at the club. He’s a great player, and he is the hardest defender I’ve ever played against.”

The £220,000-per-week defender hasn’t been in his best form this season.

TalkSPORT pundit Micky Gray wondered after Liverpool’s disastrous loss to Napoli if Van Dijk would ever reach his best level again.

However, his Premier League rival Cristian Romero has named him as one of the best defenders in the league.

Van Dijk will be wondering who will line up alongside him at the back tonight against Rangers.

Liverpool have lost Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip to injury after their defeat to Arsenal.

Andy Robertson is set to be part of the squad for the first time since before the international break.

Firmino will be relying on Van Dijk to return to his best and help keep the defence tight against Rangers.
