‘Great management’: Darren Bent says Antonio Conte has pulled off a masterstroke with one of his Tottenham players
Son got back amongst the goals in brilliant style over the weekend as he bagged a hat-trick after coming off the bench.
The 30-year-old was struggling beforehand and hadn’t scored in eight appearances for Spurs.
Conte took the decision to drop the South Korean star for the game against Leicester and Bent thinks it was ‘great management’.
Conte has pulled off masterstroke
“Great goals and great management you’d have to say from Antonio Conte,” Bent said.
“Fairplay to Son because when a manager does that, the player can go either one of two ways.
“He can either sulk and go ‘I’ve had enough of this’. Or he can do exactly what Son done and as soon as he got back on the pitch, he made an impact.
“That’s exactly what he did. You’ve got to take your hat off to Antonio Conte, but Son as well.”
Son scored a superb hat-trick against the Foxes after coming on for Richarlison in the 59th minute.
The Spurs star had put in some underwhelming displays so far this season and Conte chose to drop Son from the starting eleven.
It clearly worked out well as Son changed the course of the game after he was introduced. And Bent thinks it would have been a difficult decision for Conte to make.
He added: “Sometimes as managers you have to do that, it was probably a tough conversation to have with Son by saying ‘listen, I’m going to do you a favour and take you out of the firing line’.
“At times as a player that’s hard to take. It’s probably done him a favour because now he’s looked at the game from a different perspective, he’s come off the pitch and he’s made a real impact.”
Conte now has a wealth of attacking options with the likes of Harry Kane, Dejan Kulusevski and Richarlison in the squad.
Richarlison was brought in to provide the Italian with a higher quality alternative to his front-three and he’s done exactly that so far.
In the past, Conte may not have been able to drop Son due to the drop-off in quality when doing so.
But now the Spurs boss can effectively rotate his side and it worked wonders for Son on Saturday.
