Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan are in agreement over Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window has been a huge disappointment for all on Tyneside with a real lack of activity being sanctioned.

Eddie Howe‘s patience must be on its final thread at this point with just over 24 hours remaining in the transfer window.

As things stand, Newcastle‘s most noteworthy piece of business this summer has been the signing of Lloyd Kelly as a free agent.

Other than the arrival of the former Bournemouth man, Howe has only seen one young prospect and two backup goalkeepers land on Tyneside.

Newcastle have been able to keep hold of players like Anthony Gordon this summer despite their PSR worries back in June.

However, the lack of signings is seriously underwhelming as the Magpies look to be in a weaker position than they were at the end of last season.

Graeme Souness and Simon Jordan make Eddie Howe prediction

The Toon’s summer has now been relying on landing Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace in these final hours of the window.

However, it now look as if Guehi will stay at Palace despite Newcastle’s efforts to sign the England international.

Frustrations must be high on Tyneside with the Magpies left with around 24 hours left in the window and their top target now off the cards.

Speaking on the Three Up Front podcast, Simon Jordan and Graeme Souness have both tipped Howe to be in store for a difficult season at Newcastle which could end up with him out of the job.

“I would look at a club and say maybe Newcastle do, because the expectations have been raised, and maybe Eddie Howe will need a bounce back year, because last year might have been a bit of a disappointment for them,” said Jordan.

“Because you’ve got this ambition and you’ve got this unbridled financial might that’s going to find its way somewhere to the fore, and then you’ve got a manager that’s really opened the tin on expectation by getting in the Champions League in that first season and then getting knocked out, unfortunately, and have a disappointing season.

“So I don’t know if Eddie Howe, I’m not wishing this upon him at all, if Eddie Howe were to have a disappointing season this year, whether he’d still be in a job.”

And Souness leaped at the opportunity to have his say: “So I’ve worked there, I’ll tell you, it’ll be very difficult, yeah, depending how average the season is,” he said.

Eddie Howe may take up England vacancy

Howe has been heavily linked with the England vacancy following Gareth Southgate’s departure following the Euros.

The Newcastle boss has already shared his frustrations to the Newcastle board with public statements on their lack of business.

The 46-year-old has said he will be happy as long as he feels backed by the board, that certainly has not been the case this summer.

An interesting few months lie ahead on Tyneside with a lot of questions set to be answered.
