Gold reacts to Djed Spence deleting all mention of Spurs on Instagram

Alasdair Gold has suggested on his YouTube channel that he has spoken to some who know Djed Spence after the right-back deleted any mention of Tottenham from his Instagram page, and suggested that he is no stranger to having a clear-out on social media.

Spence is one player who would have welcomed the World Cup break. The 22-year-old arrived in the summer off the back of a brilliant loan spell at Nottingham Forest last season.

Tottenham have had problems at right wing-back. Emerson Royal has been an underwhelming signing. And Matt Doherty was poor up until a positive run of form in the latter stages of last season. So there appeared to be a good opportunity for Spence to quickly establish himself as an important player.

However, he has barely played. You could count on one hand the number of minutes he has had in the Premier League this season.

Spence’s lack of game-time is all the more baffling when you consider that Emerson has really struggled. It is hard to understand how Antonio Conte deems Spence to be that far behind the Brazilian.

And with that, Spurs fans would have been forgiven for having serious concerns when Spence cleared almost everything from his Instagram account this week. To many, that may have been a hint that he is fed up at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Gold admitted that he is not sure why Spence cleared his Instagram. But he shared how he has spoken to some around him, and believes that this is not the first time he has done this.

“I noticed there was a load of stuff buzzing around Djed Spence because I think he got rid of a load of stuff off his Instagram account. And obviously, everyone went to the worst case scenario that could be,” he told his YouTube channel.

“I actually asked some people who know him about that. And apparently, it’s something he’s done a few times in recent years. It’s almost as if he has a bit of a purge on his Instagram account, almost like a reset.

“So yes, while it has nothing about Spurs now, it has nothing about Forest, it has nothing about Middlesbrough, it has nothing about any of his previous teams. And I’m told that he’s done it about three times.”

Certainly, Conte surely cannot continue with Emerson at right wing-back after the break. Obviously, Emerson is not a bad player. And he gives everything to the cause.

But he offers nowhere near enough going forward.

Perhaps Spence is not quite ready. But it is difficult to see how he could be that much worse.

He would have known that he was always going to need time following his move. However, his patience is surely being tested.

Hopefully, Spence’s Instagram clear-out has nothing to do with his situation at Tottenham. But you could not exactly blame him if frustration had got the better of him.
