'Going to go with': TalkSPORT pundit says 31-year-old Liverpool man would be perfect addition to England squad

The World Cup is fast approaching and a number of Liverpool’s players will be heading to Qatar this weekend.

Jurgen Klopp’s side face Southampton today knowing three points is required to keep their top four hopes alive.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Darren Bent and Andy Goldstein were discussing England’s squad ahead of the World Cup.

Liverpool’s only inclusions in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man roster are Jordan Henderson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The likes of Joe Gomez and possibly even Harvey Elliott may have been disappointed not to be involved.

It’s an England squad that will be hoping to go one better than last year’s European Championships.

However, the form of some of last year’s key players has fallen off since that tournament.

Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw haven’t been the same players, while Kalvin Phillips has been injured all season.

Bent was asked if he could add a player of any nationality to Southgate’s team, who would be choose.

The TalkSPORT pundit said he would put Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk in the England squad.

Bent would put Van Dijk in England’s squad

The radio hosts were getting into the World Cup spirit when Goldstein asked Bent about his hypothetical England pick: “If you could nick a player, who would it be? Do you look at the best player on the planet, or do you look at the weakest area of England’s team?”

Bent replied: “That’s exactly what I’ve done.

“So, I’m looking at the weak spot, and that is a centre-half.

“I think I’m going to go with Virgil [Van Dijk], I just think having someone of that quality at centre-back with someone who’s very good alongside him.”

Van Dijk hasn’t been at the top of his powers this season, but is still a formidable defender.

The Dutchman will be going to the World Cup as part of Louis van Gaal’s squad and will almost certainly start each match.

Van Dijk lost his unbeaten Anfield record two weeks ago, and will be hoping to avoid a repeat against Southampton today.

He admittedly had a poor game against Nottingham Forest, but was sensational against Premier League champions Manchester City.

England are missing a dominating centre-back like Van Dijk in their squad right now.

It’s a shame that Gomez hasn’t developed into a similar player after working alongside him for so long.
