'Terrible': Alan Shearer shocked by £240,000-a-week Liverpool star v Forest
Liverpool fell to a shock 1-0 defeat away at Nottingham Forest in Saturday’s early Premier League kickoff.
Taiwo Awoniyi, who came through the ranks at Anfield, scored the winner for Steve Cooper’s side.
Liverpool were poor, spurning numerous good chances and failing to make the most of their dominance.
The Reds had over 75 percent possession, made 681 passes and won 11 corners during the match.
Liverpool also had 15 efforts, but just seven were on target.
Virgil van Dijk wasted a particularly good opportunity to open the scoring for Jurgen Klopp’s side in the first half.
James Milner floated in a great cross for his teammate, who surged inside the six-yard box.
Van Dijk would’ve had a free header on goal with just Dean Henderson standing in his way.
However, the £240,000-a-week centre-back seemingly opted to set Roberto Firmino up.
This proved a bad call, as Van Dijk’s header was too heavy for his teammate, and the ball went out of play.
Alan Shearer, speaking on Premier League Productions (22/10, 13:24), admitted he wasn’t sure what Van Dijk was going for.
He said: “This one, we can’t work out whether Van Dijk’s trying to head that cross or if it’s a terrible header and he’s going for goal.
“Whatever it is, it should be in the back of the net.”
A poor result for Liverpool in wake of a performance which, on another day, could’ve resulted in a heavy win.
The Reds were in great form going into the game, but now they’ve been left further behind in the title race.
