Glenn Hoddle has told the London Evening Standard that he was not sure about Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg when he joined Tottenham Hotspur in the summer, but insisted he is now one of the players Spurs cannot afford to lose to injury.
Hojbjerg has been a revelation in North London. He was fantastic for much of his time at Southampton. However, it is surely fair to say that he did not stand out to Spurs fans as a marquee addition when he arrived during the previous window.

And after his debut for the club, it appeared that Tottenham may have made a mistake bringing the Dane in. He endured a torrid time as Jose Mourinho’s men were beaten by Everton on the season’s opening day.
However, he has responded superbly. And he now appears to be one of the most important members of Mourinho’s squad.

His latest masterclass came in Sunday’s North London derby. It was a performance that was lauded by many supporters on social media.
And following the game, Hoddle admitted that Hojbjerg has won him over during his brief spell with the club.
“I did not like him when I first saw him arrive. I was not sure about him and whether he was a Tottenham type of player. But the style of Tottenham has changed and Jose Mourinho is stamping his authority on it,” he told the London Evening Standard.
“You would not want to play against him. That is the best thing I can say about him. He understands that there are better players than him and he gives them the ball. He has done a great job and he is one of the players Jose would least want to lose to injury, because of what he does for the team.”
Now Hojbjerg is at Spurs and performing so well, it almost seems remarkable that he was not signed sooner. The position in Mourinho’s system seems tailor-made for the 25-year-old.
And as Hoddle notes, there now seems to only be a couple of players within the Spurs squad who would elicit a stronger feeling of disappointment from the fans were they to pick up an injury.
