Georginio Wijnaldum asked why he left Liverpool
Georginio Wijnaldum has told Voetbal International that he will explain the reason behind his Liverpool exit after Euro 2020, but insisted that his Reds teammates understood his reasons once he filled them in.
After much speculation, Wijnaldum has left Anfield. His contract expires this summer. And according to BBC Sport, he has agreed to join Paris Saint-Germain after being heavily linked with Barcelona.
The potential reasons for his Liverpool exit have left many perplexed. It has previously been claimed that the Reds wanted to keep the 30-year-old.
It was also reported by Sky Sports that a new contract offer remained on the table.
With Wijnaldum seemingly changing course at the last moment, it is difficult to argue that a desire to join a particular club explains his decision. So fans largely remain the dark.
‘They completely understood’
Wijnaldum was asked in the Netherlands why he chose to leave. And while he did not offer a clear reason, he did suggest that those around him know and have understood.
“So that’s the problem: people look at it from the outside and don’t understand it,” he told Voetbal International, when asked why he is leaving. “There are many supporters who ask me why I didn’t just accept Liverpool’s offer to extend my contract. But that’s not all of course. It’s about much more than that. Things happen behind the scenes that are beyond your control as a player.
“I’ll explain that after the tournament, because now only Oranje counts. What I do want to say is that the people at the training complex, the employees of the club and my fellow players would have liked to keep me. I did tell them more. After that they completely understood my decision. That’s important to me.”
Wijnaldum yet to clear up Liverpool decision, but his response may provide a little closure
Obviously, Wijnaldum has not yet cleared everything up. But his response to the question may be welcomed for the time-being.
If those around him understood after having it explained, that would suggest that there is a very good reason for his move.
Perhaps, the fans will not be happy when that reason comes to light.
Wijnaldum was an outstanding performer for Liverpool. And he played a key role in all of the success they enjoyed over the last five years.
But it seems that they may find out a little more soon.
