Gary Neville says West Ham star is going to start every game for his country
Gary Neville has claimed that West Ham midfielder Declan Rice is up near the top of the pecking order when it comes to the team selection of England manager Gareth Southgate.
Rice, 22, started in England’s win over Croatia in their opening Euro 2020 group stage match.
The Hammers youngster has established himself as a key figure for his country, as well as for his club at the London Stadium.
He’s a defensive midfielder that has a bit of everything to his game.
Firstly, he’s superb as a defensive screen in front of the back four. He’s tenacious with the way he tackles and intercepts. Secondly, the technical side of his game is improving to show he can contribute going forward on the ball. Finally, he’s already got so much leadership at the age of 22 that must help others around him.
Pundit Neville has stressed how important the West Ham ace is for England.
“I feel Harry Kane is undroppable in this England team, but I’d put Declan Rice pretty much up there at the moment, he’s going to play every game,” Neville told Sky Sports.
Is Rice untouchable for England?
England boss Gareth Southgate has options in his squad to play as his two central midfielder. Fortunately, West Ham man Rice looks like he’s included regardless of the combination.
The London-born star gives such a balance to the side, so either Kalvin Phillips, Jordan Henderson or even Mason Mount can slot in effortlessly alongside him as a midfield pivot.
He’s had a meteoric rise in the past couple of years, but he can’t let the game get to him. Fortunately, he seems like a wise head on young shoulders.
Rice, Harry Kane, Mason Mount and Jordan Pickford are among those you expect to see in every England XI.
