Back in 1993, Manchester United broke the British transfer record to raid Nottingham Forest to sign Roy Keane – and now, Gary Neville guessed how much the Irishman would cost in today’s game.
Back in the summer of 1993, a whole 31 years ago, Sir Alex Ferguson chose to splash a record £3.75m fee to sign Keane – who was only 21 at the time. He had played 154 times for Forest before that time.
Of course, Keane went on to become one of the biggest players in the club’s history – staying at Old Trafford for the next 13 years and clocking up an enormous 480 appearances under manager Sir Alex.
Seven Premier League titles, the 1999 Champions League trophy in which Manchester United won the treble. Four FA Cups, four Community Shields. Man United certainly got value for money from him.

Gary Neville says how much Roy Keane would now be worth
It is of course, hypothetical when pundits discuss how much old players would be worth in today’s game. But Keane is still seen as one of the Premier League’s best-ever midfielders, when at his best.
Right now, there aren’t many better central midfielders than Declan Rice in the Premier League. The Arsenal star moved to The Emirates from West Ham last summer, costing Mikel Arteta’s side £100m.
Probably, Rice is in the top three midfielders in the League. Manchester City’s Rodri is the one that is able to rival the England star in terms of quality. Neville discussed Keane’s value on Stick To Football.
Jill Scott asked: “How much do you think you’d be worth now?” Neville responded: “I think now – how much was Declan Rice? £100m? I think you’d be £100m.” Keane said: “I would’ve thought so”.

Is Roy Keane the best midfielder the Premier League has seen?
Eventually, Keane was released by Manchester United after a disagreement with Sir Alex. He moved to Celtic but injuries caught up with the 67-time Ireland star – playing just 13 times for the Scottish giants.
Patrick Vieira, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and plenty more are in the conversation for best midfielder. All four of those, you would imagine, would be in a similar price range to Arsenal’s Rice.
What is ironic, is that Jamie Carragher has compared Arsenal and England star Rice to Keane this term – even claiming that Rice is “incredibly underrated”. Rice can go on to become as good as Keane was.
But, if he is to do so, then he needs to win the Premier League on a number of occasions. Arsenal are well within the conversation this season and Rice has had a big part to play in that, currently on top.
