Gary Neville suggested on commentary during Newcastle United’s win over Aston Villa (broadcast on Sky Sports; 13/2; 15:48) that Dan Burn was the Magpies’ best player by a mile on another impressive day for Eddie Howe’s side.

Newcastle have put themselves four points clear of the relegation zone. Kieran Trippier scored the only goal of the game as the Magpies beat Villa at St James’ Park.

It was another superb performance from the home side. They have now won their last three. And with their new signings through the door, a number of sides above them will fear being caught at some stage in the coming weeks.

Obviously, Matt Targett was unavailable for the game due to his loan move from the Villans. But Sunday’s clash did present the Newcastle faithful with their first opportunity to see Burn in black and white following his move from Brighton.

Of course, it was Trippier who got the decisive goal. But Burn was another January signing who was colossal against Steven Gerrard’s side.

Neville went on to name the 29-year-old as his man of the match. But before confirming that decision, the commentator opened up on why he had been so impressed.

“He’s been the best Newcastle player by a mile, Dan Burn,” he told Sky Sports. “He’s brought real composure at the back, he’s leading that line, waving Schar up. All his work’s been really good.”

Newcastle may be tempted to start looking up as Burn shines against Villa

Newcastle have put some distance between themselves and the bottom three. And they have some real momentum now that they have won their last three.

Interestingly, they are now only four points closer to the bottom three than the top-half of the table. And after a superb January, you really would not be surprised if their impressive run continued.

The number one objective this term is to ensure that they stay up. From there, the potential seems limitless.

With players such as Burn now in the side, staying up is going to be a much easier task for Newcastle.
