Liverpool have been an irresistible footballing force this season.
Indeed, the Reds are arguably the best team in the world right now, they’re top of the Premier League and they breezed through the Champions League group phase.
Mohamed Salah is in Ballon d’Or winning form while Arne Slot has transformed numerous players this term.

Gary Neville likes Liverpool’s ability to change styles
Neville spoke about how Liverpool change their style to suit the gamestate.
The pundit says that he really likes the way Liverpool aren’t scared to switch things up, noting that they can go long or play in a more possession-based style.
“I said it earlier on in the season, there was a game, I can’t remember which game it was where I thought that they played three or four different styles within a certain half or within a certain game.
“And that’s what I like most about this Liverpool team, to be honest with you, because we’ve been conditioned for years now to think you have to have this principle and this value and this philosophy of playing, you must stick to it. And then I see them playing, you know, Robertson lumps one over the top for a penalty at Bournemouth, I see Van Dijk playing sort of 60-yard direct passes in behind, I see Trent Alexander-Arnold playing long passes in behind for Salah from deep, and I think yeah, that’s how football should be played.”
Liverpool goal and passing stats this season
Neville says that he loves the way Liverpool can change their style on the fly, and the stats show that the Reds have become the masters of versatility.
Indeed, Liverpool have scored 101 goals this season, and those goals have come in a number of different ways.
| How Liverpool are scoring their goals | Percentage of goals scored |
|---|---|
| Open play | 64% |
| Counter-attacks | 20% |
| Set-pieces | 11% |
| Penalties | 6% |
Liverpool can counter, they can score from set-plays and they can score from open play too.
As for their passing style, as with most top teams, Liverpool do play it short more often than not, but they’re not scared to knock it long if the opportunity presents itself.
| How Liverpool are passing the ball | Percentage of passes played |
|---|---|
| Short | 88% |
| Long | 9% |
| Crosses | 3% |
Arne Slot has been brilliant since arriving on Merseyside, and he’s shown that you don’t necessarily need to be wed to one stubborn tactical style in order to be successful at the highest level.
Other Premier League managers would do well to learn a thing or two from Slot.
