Liverpool have been utterly fantastic this season.
The Reds are top of the Premier League and top of the Champions League, and it’s fair to say that Arne Slot has taken to life on Merseyside like a duck to water.
What’s more impressive is that Slot has got Liverpool playing in this way without doing much transfer business at all.
| Liverpool summer signings | Fee |
| Giorgi Mamardashvili | £35m (loaned back to Valencia) |
| Federico Chiesa | £10m |
Instead, Slot has improved his side by coaching his current crop of players to be even better.
Trent Alexander-Arnold wanted to improve defensively this season, and Slot has made that happen, while speaking on The Overlap, Jamie Carragher has noted three Liverpool players who look a lot better this season.

Jamie Carragher says three Liverpool players have really improved
Carragher spoke about how Slot has improved this Liverpool team and three players in particular.
Indeed, Carragher says that Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have seriously improved in attack, while Ryan Gravenberch has transformed in midfield.
Paul Merson has also hailed Gravenberch for his transformation recently.
“Yeah, I’m a big believer in that. We all get excited by transfers and we always want to see our team improve. And sometimes when we talk about a coach, I almost think sometimes a coach’s role is not almost just buying players.
It’s actually improving the players that he inherits. So when you actually look at Slot, Gravenberch looks a different player. Luis Diaz looks a different player.
Gakpo looks a different player. So he’s had an influence there. So these are players that were, some of them bought 18 months ago, but they look completely different players.”
Gravenbech, Diaz and Gakpo stats compared to last season
Carragher says that Diaz, Gakpo and Gravenberch look a lot better this season, and the stats back that up.
Indeed, Diaz and Gakpo are scoring and assisting at a much better rate than they were last term.
| Luis Diaz last season | Luis Diaz this season | Cody Gakpo last season | Cody Gakpo this season | |
| Games | 37 | 21 | 35 | 22 |
| Goals | 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Assists | 5 | 2 | 5 | 3 |
| Minutes | 2646 | 1346 | 1646 | 1234 |
| Minutes per goal contribution | 204 | 135 | 127 | 112 |
These two have improved their output massively.
Of course, with a player like Gravenberch, you can’t quite judge them solely on goals and assists, but his all-round game has improved too.
| Ryan Gravenberch last season | Ryan Gravenberch this season | |
| Games | 26 | 22 |
| Starts | 12 | 22 |
| Tackles per game | 1 | 1.7 |
| Interceptions per game | 0.5 | 1.6 |
| Key passes per game | 0.6 | 0.9 |
The stats show that Slot is getting more out of these players than Jurgen Klopp was last term, and the league table is also showing that.
| Position | Team | Played MP | Won W | Drawn D | Lost L | For GF | Against GA | Diff GD | Points Pts |
| 1 | 22 | 16 | 5 | 1 | 54 | 21 | 33 | 53 |
The Reds are in a great position at the moment, and Slot deserves tons of credit for taking this team to this level and helping these players improve individually.
