'Utterly self-indulgent': Pundit slams 'cold' Tottenham player after Emirates hammering

BBC pundit Garth Crooks has lambasted Tottenham defender, Emerson Royal, for his tackle on Gabriel Martinelli in the NLD this weekend.

Spurs were beaten for the first time this season as Arsenal scored three to put the game to bed. But things could have been different had Royal not scythed down Martinelli to get a straight red and effectively hand the game to Arsenal.

And writing about the incident in his BBC team of the week column, Crooks touched on the lack of discipline shown from Emerson after praising Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka for doing the exact opposite.

“What a pity Emerson couldn’t do the same. His tackle on Martinelli was cold, calculated and utterly self-indulgent. He should be banned for six weeks not three games,” Crooks wrote.

The Brazilian now finds himself in a tricky situation at Tottenham. He was under pressure from some anyway due to a number of average performances and with Matt Doherty now back, Emerson might well be dropped.

Certainly, Antonio Conte will have been far from impressed with what he saw and the Italian is never scared to make a big change if needed.

TBR’s View: Emerson Royal Tackle Blows His Chances

He’d worked hard to cement his slot in the XI and it was reported over the weekend how he’d invested off the pitch to try and improve both physically and mentally.

However, he had a complete head loss against Arsenal against a player in Martinelli who absolutely tore him to shreds really.

Emerson Royal made a huge error here. He handed the game on a plate to Arsenal and going forward, he’s likely to have lost his place for the foreseeable future at the very least.
