‘Garlick masterclass needed’: Some Arsenal fans react to ‘ridiculous’ reported fee for 7-assist maestro

Some Arsenal fans have been reacting on social media to reports by Leicestershire Live that Leicester want around £80m for James Maddison.

Mikel Arteta is considering a move to sign Maddison this summer to improve the Gunners’ creativity. The Spaniard had sought to retain Martin Odegaard after his loan spell last season but the Norwegian is returning to Real Madrid.

Maddison now ranks highly on Arsenal’s shortlist of midfield reinforcements, per football.london and the Daily Mail. But Technical Director Edu and Director of Football Operations Richard Garlick face breaking the club’s transfer record.

Arsenal were confident that a £60m package would be enough to secure a deal for Maddison this summer. But Leicester want closer to the £80m Manchester United paid for Harry Maguire in 2019 to allow the midfielder to leave.

That would be a club-record fee for Arsenal, eclipsing the £72m spent on former Lille forward Nicolas Pepe in 2019. And the Gunners would also need Maddison to hand in a transfer request if the Foxes are to consider any sale.

Maddison made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season and struck his most productive campaign yet. The 24-year-old scored eight goals and offered seven assists, despite fitness issues seeing him play fewer minutes.

However, some Arsenal fans reacting on social media believe Maddison would not be worth them spending £80m. Instead, those supporters implored Edu and Garlick to look for alternative options who would not break the bank.

Arsenal have also eyed a move for Houssem Aouar. The Sun claim the Frenchman was priced out of a £55m move to the Emirates last year but is now available for £20m after Lyon failed to qualify for the Champions League.

But there are a few who want Arsenal to pursue Maddison, as they doubt Leicester truly expect to make £80m. The Foxes wanted more than that for Ben Chilwell last year, per the Mirror, but sold him to Chelsea for £45m.

So, here are some of the messages Arsenal fans have shared on Leicester wanting £80m for Maddison…
