Gabriel Martinelli says Granit Xhaka is amazing after Arsenal win
Few Premier League players have experienced the kind of redemption story Xhaka has had in recent years. Of course, few will forget just how close to the brink he seemed to come at one stage.
Granit Xhaka is amazing
He has been outstanding throughout the season so far. And the turnaround was potentially completed at the weekend as the Swiss scored the third and final Arsenal goal against Spurs.
Xhaka is not really in the side to score goals. But his leadership is hugely important. And Martinelli has provided an insight into what happened after Thomas Partey broke the deadlock at the weekend – revealing that it was Xhaka who took control of the situation.
“Xhaka is an amazing lad, you see how much he dedicates himself to the team, how much he cares about the match and the players as well, he is definitely one of our leaders,” he told The Times.
“Right after our first goal against Tottenham, he calls everybody into a huddle, asking us to stay calm and saying we will score more goals. That’s when you see how important he is to all players. For young players like me and Bukayo [Saka], it’s very important to have a team-mate like him.”
Xhaka had been impressive for some time. But, given how damaged his relationship with supporters was, it seemed as if there would always be some doubts about him.
Some fans may have thought that they would never be able to fully rely on him. And they may not have expected the scars following that game against Crystal Palace to ever heal completely.
However, Xhaka has gone above and beyond what many would have imagined he would achieve. He is now a fan favourite and playing, by far, the best football of his Arsenal spell.
He may not be wearing the captain’s armband. But clearly, he remains a huge influence in the dressing room. And the Arsenal squad would have it no other way.
