Aston Villa shocked English football on Wednesday evening by announcing the signing of England striker Danny Ings from Southampton. A move is believed to have cost Dean Smith’s side around £30million, with Ings in the final year of his Saints deal. Gabby Agbonlahor has reacted on Instagram.
Ings, 29, was highly sought after this summer due to his contract situation. The three-time England international has also bagged 46 goals in 100 appearances for the club he supported as a child. But the opportunity to join big-spending Villa was too good to turn down this summer.
Jack Grealish looks as if he will move to Manchester City and Villa have already spent the £100million they could receive. Incoming signings Emi Buendia, Leon Bailey and Ings have cost the best part of the nine-figure fee. Sky Sports posted on Instagram after a deal was complete.
What has Agbonlahor said about Villa signing Ings?
It is an interesting one. With Villa having brought in Bailey and Buendia to supposedly cover the loss of Grealish, the next position that required strengthening was probably in the middle of the park. But Villa have chosen to hand Ollie Watkins some huge competition up top in the form of Ings.
Who starts? A big decision. Perhaps Watkins could play out wide himself, and Bailey as a 10 – something he did at Leverkusen. What it gives Smith is a big selection headache. Villa icon Agbonlahor responded to the signing by commenting on the above post, with a five-word verdict.
