Manchester United have a rich history of defenders and Mason Mount has claimed there’s one in the current squad who is a nightmare to play against.

Mount hasn’t had the greatest of times at Old Trafford since he moved on from Chelsea but he’s still more than well placed to share information on his teammates.

Indeed, when it comes to actually training with his teammates and in particular, beating them, Mount has claimed there’s one defender who is impossible to get past.

And that man is England left-back, Luke Shaw.

Mason Mount says why Luke Shaw is so hard to play against

Everyone knows that Luke Shaw is a top player when he’s fit and he’s been unfortunate for much of his career with those injuries.

However, when it comes to being an actual one on one defender, Mount has claimed there’s nobody at United who is better.

‘I’d say Luke Shaw, just how strong he is. Freaky, you can’t get past cannot go past him,” Mount told Sky Sports.

“Very army like, he uses his arms and I mean I played against him in training and that but the wingers that play like Amad, speaking to them and just saying training even if you knock it past you think you got him. He’ll put his arm out and just…Obviously he’s very good on the ball. So I’d probably say Shaw.”

Luke Shaw’s stats for Manchester United in the 2025/26 season

It’s been refreshing to see Shaw play so much this season. He’s featured in nearly every game and finally looks back to his very best, which is good news for England and United.

In terms of his defensive contribution, he has been solid as well.

While he isn’t all about tackling, with only 56% of duels won, he is excellent when it comes to his overall defending, having been dribble past just 15 times all season.

He has made 42 interceptions, putting him in the upper-echelons among his peers in that stat, while an impressive 105 ball recoveries also mark him among the highest in that category.

As of now, there probably isn’t a better a left-back in Europe than Luke Shaw and if he can keep injury free, then United are well set for the future in that position.
